However, the term is sometimes used interchangeably with metabolic rate to mean the number of calories you burn. The higher your metabolic rate the higher the number of calories you burn and the easier it is for you to lose weight.

However, having a high metabolism is advantageous to you as it gives you more energy and makes you feel better. Therefore, anyway that you could enhance metabolism is a good thing. Here are some ways you could increase your metabolism rate:

High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT)

This involves quick and extremely intense bursts of activities in the form of exercises. The kind of activity is integral in helping you burn fat thus vital to weight loss, especially for HIIT activities. According to studies, HIIT increases metabolism and burns more fat as compared to normal exercise routines. One study in overweight young men found that 12 weeks of high-intensity exercise reduced fat mass by 4.4 pounds (2 kg) and belly fat by 17%.

Weight Lifting

It is a fact that muscles are more metabolically active compared to fat. This means that when you build your muscles you are actually increasing metabolism during the workout and after. So, get to the gym and lift weights to increase metabolism.

Lifting heavy weights leads to your muscle fibers to tear. Once you heal, your muscles build up thus increasing metabolism.

In one study, 48 overweight women were placed on a diet of 800 calories per day, along with either no exercise, aerobic exercise or resistance training. After the diet, the women who did the resistance training maintained their muscle mass, metabolism and strength. The others lost weight, but also lost muscle mass and experienced a decrease in metabolism.

Replace Cooking Fats

Cooking fats are not healthy for your body. You are required to replace them with coconut oil as it has relatively high medium-chain fats. Medium-chain fats are known for increasing your metabolism better than long-chain fats because medium-chain fats are easy to break down.

Stand Up Often

You can burn a lot of calories standing up compared to sitting down. Burning calories translates to higher metabolism. Therefore, if you have a desk job, it is important to stand up at different intervals or invest in a standing desk.

Drink More Water

Studies have shown that drinking 17 ounces (0.5 liters) of water increases resting metabolism by 10–30% for about an hour. This may be even greater if you drink cold water, as your body uses energy to heat it up the water to body temperature.

Water can also help fill you up and studies have shown that drinking water a half an hour before you eat can help you eat less. One study of overweight adults found that those who drank half a liter of water before their meals lost 44% more weight than those who didn’t.
