What is all the hype about antioxidants? Find out why you need them in your diet.

How Antioxidants keep us healthy

Antioxidants are substances that protect your cells from damage that may occur from exposure to certain chemicals, smoking, radiation, and pollution. These antioxidants can be found in foods such as fruits, vegetables, nuts, whole grains, and smaller amounts are found in poultry, fish, and meats.

Free Radicals and antioxidants

Free radicals are waste produced by cells as the body processes food and interacts with the environment. If the body is unable to remove these free radicals then it will lead to oxidative stress. This harms your cells and body function. Oxidative stress has been linked to conditions such as arthritis, stroke, immune deficiency, and heart disease.

Antioxidants neutralize free radicals helping to boost our overall health.

Benefits of taking antioxidants

Antioxidants like Vitamin A, C, and E boost your immunity and promote healthy aging. Taking of foods rich in antioxidants such as fruits and vegetables protects the heart and helps prevent cardiovascular problems.

Antioxidants prevent free radical damage that has been found to cause cancer Use of even antioxidant supplements has been shown to help treat cancer. Research shows that high levels of antioxidants may interfere with treatment so it is best to seek doctor’s advice.

They may help relief from arthritis due to their anti-inflammatory nature by reducing joint pains and other symptoms of Rheumatoid arthritis. The anthocyanins in berries and Vitamin C in citrus fruits help fight the free radicals that cause arthritis.

Increase in use of antioxidants can help protect the body against memory problems, eye problems, and mood disorders.
